Bloody Island Massacre of Pomo Indians (California)
The military and California settlers believed the Pomo had killed two Clear Lake settlers who had been abusing and murdering Pomo people. In retaliation, a U.S. cavalry detachment murdered 60‒100 Pomo Indians near Clear Lake. This incident led to a general outbreak of settler attacks against, and mass killings of, Native people all over northern California (“List of Indian massacres”).
